You’re so funny and smart!

My wife was giving the kids a bath last night and my 3yr old said something that made her laugh. She said “you’re so funny” to him and he replied with a straight face “I know mom. It’s cause I’m so smart”. I guess he doesn’t suffer from low self-esteem 🙂

Bobs Books

My 5yr and 3yr old are both reading Bobs Books. They are like Dick and Jane were when we were kids. They come in sets of ~10 books (about 10 pages each). Each set comes in a box which the boys love. The 3yr old just moved to set 2. My 5yr old just moved to set 4. We started reading these because we enrolled the 5yr old in a after school reading session with a teacher from his school. I was sceptical that he could read at 5 but I was amazed that he could read so well! Once he got started the 3yr old wanted to do it to so we tried and I was astonished that he could do it too. Every night we read the boys books before bed and now they each read 1 of Bobs Books too. I think I started reading in 1st grade. They are in preschool and both reading. I guess it shows you just how capable kids are.

In the Future

My three year old little boy has been fascinated with the future. Every time he hears the phrase “in the future” he giggles. I wish I knew what he thought it meant. I explained to both boys that the tomorrow is the future and yesterday is the past. The little one said “yeah right” like I was making something up. Man, I wish I knew what he thought the “future” was all about.

Yelling At Kids

My kids get yelled at all the time. My wife is an Italian yeller who comes from a string of yelling parents. My mom wasn’t much of a yeller herself but my dad was known to yell here and there. Anyway, my boys get yelled at all the time – for not listening, not cleaning up as they were asked, hurting each other, nagging mom, sneaking, breaking things, etc. I work from home so I hear the yelling all day long while I’m in my office. Usually I wake up to my wife yelling at the kids as they get ready for school.

Recently I read a few articles on the web about how yelling at your kids can lead to low self esteem or at least teaches them that you don’t mean what you say until you start yelling. I’m worried that all the yelling at home is bad. I’ve been working on yelling less (honestly it’s hard once you are used to yelling). I sent my wife links to articles on yelling. I think she agrees with me but I think its even harder for her to stop yelling since she grew up in a house full of yelling.

Allow Myself To Introduce Myself

I have a wife and 2 boys (5 & 3). I love my family. I work from home for a large IT company as a computer programmer. I’m currently programming in Smalltalk but can program in several programming languages. I used to work for a large auto insurance company in Cleveland but switched to this job because it paid a bit more and let me work from home. I run several web businesses on the side – mostly related to infant colic. My 2nd boy was very colicky which is why we started the businesses. My family and my wife’s family all live in the Cleveland area which is why we live here (to be close to them).
